ধরি, রহিমের বর্তমান বয়স = R বছর তার ছেলের বর্তমান বয়স = S বছর রহিম এবং তার ছেলের বয়সের সমষ্টি 55 বছর অর্থাৎ, R+S = 55 ..... (1) 5 বছর আগে, রহিমের ছেলে রহিমের চেয়ে 29 বছরের ছোট ছিল। 5 বছর আগে রহিমের বয়স ছিল = R−5 বছর 5 বছর আগে ছেলের বয়স ছিল = S−5 বছর প্রশ্ন অনুযায়ী, (R−5)−(S−5) = 29 ⇒ R−5−S+5 = 29 ⇒ R−S = 29 .....
